Friday the 13th: Feeling lucky?

Today is Friday the 13th.  And on this day, the topics of superstition and luck go hand in hand.  There are just certain symbols that over time have come to represent good luck and bad luck.

A rainbow or a four leaf clover are pretty nice to see aren’t they? But what about those bad omens?  A broken mirror, walking under a ladder, and seemingly anything with the number 13 – these conjure up a different feeling altogether for many. I remember the first time I was in a building that went from floor 12 to 14 because they didn’t want a 13th floor.  I was amazed.  Does a number hold that much power?  If you do some research on where this comes from it just gets more puzzling.  One explanation from ancient lore is that 13 must be unlucky because 12 is perfection.  The logic just fails.

But there is nothing more powerful than fear and that is a by-product of these superstitions.  It is a force that can turn apprehension into self-fulfilling prophesies.  The key is that how we think and feel about something drives our actions and as a matter of course then, our results.  So on this particular day, it’s the perfect time we see luck for what it is, and what it isn’t.

“I’m a great believer in luck.  And I find that the harder I work, the more of it I have.” (Thomas Jefferson)

“Luck comes from believing you’re lucky.” (Tennessee Williams)

“Luck has a peculiar habit of favoring those who don’t depend on it.” (Unknown)

“Shallow men believe in luck.  Strong men believe in cause and effect.”  (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

“Luck is the idol of the idle.”  (Proverb)

“It’s hard to detect good luck – it looks so much like something you’ve earned.”  (Frank A. Clark)

“Diligence is the mother of good luck.” (Benjamin Franklin)

And my personal favorite from Tony Robbins:

The meeting of preparation with opportunity generates the offspring we call luck.”
