Becoming better….

We all recognize that in life we are going to face disappointments.  People and situations are going to disappoint us.  We are going to disappoint ourselves.  And there will be times when it just does not seem that life is fair.  I have realized for some time that life was not designed to be fair.  After all, what is “fair”?  The question “why me?” has a back story of “why not someone else”?  And it goes beyond just disappointment to be an attitude of distrust and bitterness.  We need to shift away from that thinking and perspective so that instead of becoming bitter from disappointment, we become better from lessons in life.

One extraordinary example of this is Desmond Tutu.  Here is someone who could have easily become bitter at his circumstances.  But he did not.  He did what he could where he was and ultimately, he has been a compelling catalyst of change; for individuals, for nations, for the world.  Here are a few of my favorite thoughts from this remarkable man:

“Without forgiveness, there is no future.”

“Forgiveness says you are given a chance to make a new beginning.”

“Your ordinary acts of love and hope point to the extraordinary promise that every human life is of inestimable value.”

“Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”

“.. God can smile.. because God knows what is coming next.”

A valuable promise to make ourselves – allow life and everything that happens to make us better.  Allow nothing else.
