From the experts: One of my Dad’s favorites

When my father was starting out his professional life after serving in the military, he worked in a factory on “second shift”.  Not uncommon in the late 1940’s and early 50’s.  It wasn’t a terribly exciting job but it was a good job and he was was grateful.  But he was always looking to improve himself and he saw all those hours just standing there watching machines as an opportunity to create his own classroom.  He had heard Earl Nightingale speak and knew he had a radio show.  So he took a second part time job during the day so he could save for a small portable radio he could take to work with him at the factory and listen to this extraordinary thought leader.   Earl Nightingale’s teaching created a catalyst that changed his life. And by extension, my own.

Today is the 25th anniversary of my father’s death.  But I still honor him everyday by remaining committed as he was to constantly striving to grow, to learn and to serve.  There has never been a better example to follow.  Hope Edelman once wrote that:  “…[his/her] presence influenced who I was, and [his/her] absence influences who I am. Our  lives are shaped as much by those who leave us as they are by those who stay.”  I believe that is so true and that my Dad’s presence continues to influence me now.

In his honor, for today’s post I am sharing with you Earl Nightingale in his own words.  Enjoy this audio of his recording “The Strangest Secret”.  My Dad and thousands of others, including me can attest to the truth of the words and the power of the practice.

And by the way – the second job he took to pay for the radio was pumping gas at a local gas station.  In time, he wasn’t just pumping gas.  He owned the business.
