Coaching insight: If you are a fish, don’t try to climb trees…

Today’s coaching insight comes from one of my favorite quotes from Albert Einstein – someone I think we all would agree knew a thing or two!  Here are his words:

“Everyone is a genius.  But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

Mull that over for a bit.  What is it that you believe you should be able to do that you can’t?  Are you sure it’s not a matter of expecting the fish to be able to climb a tree?  This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try new things or even work to improve yourself.  But sometimes, we need to face facts and recognize where the fish:tree combination isn’t working and let it go.

A contemporary thought leader, John Maxwell has some thoughts on this subject.  As we begin to venture into having a place to start, knowing yourself is the first part of the equation.
